Experiences at Amanjiwo

The world’s largest Buddhist monument lies just minutes from Amanjiwo, yet the magnificent Borobudur is only one of the region’s many attractions. Amanjiwo is surrounded by two additional Unesco World Heritage Sites - Prambanan Temple Complex and Yogyakarta’s Cosmological Axis - which are both conveniently located within a one-hour drive from the resort. This close proximity allows guests to explore and immerse themselves in the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. Amanjiwo offers bespoke excursions and adventure experiences tailored to individual interests.

Resident Anthropologists

With a deep connection to Java's cultural heritage, Amanjiwo’s two dedicated anthropologists, Patrick Vanhoebrouck and Jean-Pascal Elbaz, bring their years of experience to offer engaging lectures and lead comprehensive tours of ancient temples and sacred sites.

Immersions in Nature

From the steep flanks of Mount Merapi to the lush Menoreh Hills, Central Java’s dramatic landscapes provide the perfect base for trekking. Discover villages lost in time, fragrant clove plantations and hidden temples along the way.

Ancient Temples

Legend has it that 2,000 temples once graced the plains beyond Amanjiwo. Visit the magnificent Pawon and Mendut, constructed around 800 AD; 7th- and 8th -century Hindu temples on the Dieng Plateau; and the ancient complex of Ratu Boko.

Arts and Culture

In Indonesia’s cultural heartland, art in all its forms has been celebrated for centuries. Villages host frequent festivals with gamelan music and spirited dancing, while Hindu and Buddhist temples exhibit remarkable architecture and centuries old sacred rites. Nearby Yogyakarta sees a mix of Javanese antiquities with two distinct temple complexes.
