A Timeless Beacon

Aman Tokyo, Japan

Aman Tokyo has always stood apart. Rising above the ever-shifting Tokyo skyline, Aman’s first urban sanctuary introduced a new kind of hotel to the city’s scene. Since opening its doors just over a decade ago, Aman Tokyo has become something of an icon within the brand’s wider constellation: a singular place where contemporary design, traditional Japanese ritual and craftsmanship converge. A gateway to Tokyo’s cultural soul, its signature experiences invite deeper, more authentic connection to the capital – an approach that continues to set the standard for urban hospitality across the globe today.

Arrival Above the Skyline

Designed by the late Kerry Hill, Aman Tokyo unfolds as a contemporary reimagining of a traditional Japanese residence. From ground level to arrival on the Otemachi Tower’s 33rd floor, a transition ensues. The dynamism of the streets below gracefully fades into the sanctuary of Aman. A world crafted around the philosophy of peace, privacy and discretion above all.

From Aman Tokyo’s lobby, sweeping panoramas stretch out from the Imperial Palace gardens, across the city, to Mount Fuji and beyond, while a soaring 30-metre ceiling – Hill’s interpretation of a Japanese lantern – appears cathedral-like above with layers of washi paper stretched wide over shoji framework; delicate in beauty yet directing natural light with commanding presence. While at first glance grand in its proportions, Aman Tokyo’s ability to maintain connection with the capital below is integral to the experience. As strains from a traditional Koto player drift through the space, a sense of grounding ensues, a feeling of home synonymous with an Aman welcome.

Cultural Connection

Beyond its design prowess, Aman Tokyo has become renowned for its extraordinary access: to rituals, to traditions and to the crafts that have shaped Japanese culture for centuries. Deeply personal, experiences aim to foster understanding of a living, breathing culture. Not simply memories and moments, but connections that endure long after departure.

Among perhaps the most distinctive is the opportunity to learn Iaido swordsmanship, an art form that dates to the 16th century. Through an exclusive, private session focussing on movement and etiquette, not only is the intensity of this martial discipline revealed, but the refinement, dedication and morality of the samurai spirit deeply felt. Elsewhere, the city itself is experienced through an alternative lens. A cruise along the Sumida River traces waterways once followed by merchants and traders, uncovering layers of history unseen from land.

Craftsmanship-Led Cuisine

It follows that Aman Tokyo’s dining scene is also one with reverence for the local way of living with seasonality and craftsmanship defining the experience across four distinct venues. This spans from Aman signature concept, Arva – where simple ingredients are transformed through precision preparation into bold, beloved dishes that give the comfort of an Italian family kitchen to Musashi by Aman, where Master Chef Musashi upholds the art of Edomae-style sushi with dedication and passion.

Centred around an intimate Hinoki wood counter, Musashi’s omakase experience is shaped entirely by the finest ingredients, selected personally by Musahi each morning from Tokyo’s markets. But the experience extends far beyond this dining tradition. Since 2020, Musashi has cultivated his own Hitomebore rice in the pure waters of Yamanashi Prefecture, transforming it into the shari that forms the foundation of every bite. His craftsmanship can also be found in the restaurant’s hand-crafted ceramic tableware and sake cups, alongside original craft spirits, produced from his rice harvests. A heartfelt devotion to the craft, from harvest to plate, unlike anything found elsewhere.

Ritualistic Wellness

Spanning 2,500 square metres across two floors, the Aman Spa is amongst the largest hotel spa in Tokyo – a sanctuary of stillness above the city where the feeling of home, and an integral expression of the brand’s wellness philosophy, come together to bring harmony. At its heart, a 30-metre swimming pool feels as if integrated into the skyline, and is flanked by treatment rooms, movement studios and traditional onsen-style bathing facilities.

The perfect place to restore after an afternoon immersed in urban energy, Evening Yoga and Meditation encourages relaxation as day turns to dusk through gentle movement, meditation and breathwork, while further seasonal wellness journeys draw inspiration from Japan’s ever-changing natural landscape. Summer treatments harness ingredients from the forest in full bloom, including Hinoki wood, Dokudami leaves and Hakka mint to calm and cool the body, mind and spirit during the warmer months, while traditional acupuncture offers a restorative counterpoint to the hectic pace of modern travel, relieving muscular tension and improving circulation.

In a city constantly on the move, Aman Tokyo’s approach to wellness is to create time to pause and integrate ancient rituals into contemporary life.

Over a decade since its opening, Aman Tokyo continues to evolve, while remaining close to Aman’s original intent – to create a hospitality experience that is peerless in every way. As the city too continues to transform all around, Aman Tokyo remains a timeless beacon. A guardian of Japan’s cultural authenticity, timeless craftsmanship and enduring spirit for years to come.
