Mountain highs in the Dolomites

In the picturesque village of San Cassiano, amid an extraordinary Unesco-listed mountain landscape, Rosa Alpina invites the intrepid for a dose of high-altitude adventure.

This June, two newly created retreats promise a combination of heart-racing thrills and jaw-dropping spectacle.

The Extreme Mountain Sports Retreat invites guests to challenge themselves on the Dolomites’ routes by mountain bike, as well as putting their legs to the test by skyrunning the trails, tackling challenging ascents and taking in staggering panoramas.

The Extreme Rock-Climbing Retreat pits seasoned climbers against some of the region’s renowned rock formations, including vertical limestone walls and dramatic rocky spires, supported by professional mountain guides.

Both retreats, available on request until October 2nd, start with daily morning yoga or stretching, followed by the day’s activity, which could include skyrunning, climbing, mountain biking, hiking, traversing via ferrata or taking on a triathlon. The physically demanding day is fuelled by balanced nutrition care of Rosa Alpina’s quartet of restaurants, each offering seasonal and sustainable dining, whereas the spa team are on hand to assure relaxation and recovery in the evening, with revivifying deep-tissue massage treatments such as the Alpine Herbal Muscle Relief.

Extreme Desert and Mountain Sports

Over the course of the four-night retreat, guests will face extreme physical challenges in two of the most beautiful environments in the region – from the stark lunar beauty of the Agafay Desert to the rugged peaks of the Atlas Mountains.

Expert guides lead the way on long-distance desert runs, 60-mile mountain biking excursions, and leg-straining trail runs with breathtaking mountain ascents. Amanjena provides all necessary equipment, including hydration packs, first-aid kits, water and energy bars, and every afternoon, the Aman Spa therapists step up to soothe tired muscles with specialist treatments. Naturally, such an intense programme needs tailored nutritional support, and the resort’s restaurants offer balanced menus to help athletes carb-load and re-energise as the challenge demands.

Amanpuri, Thailand

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon is the longest-running race of its kind in Southeast Asia, drawing athletes from across the world to Thailand to experience one of the most beautiful courses in the sport, taking in a beachside run, a swim through both the Andaman Sea and a freshwater lagoon, and culminating with a challenging ride through the Phuket countryside and over the Naithon Hills. The Amanpuri team will take care of pre-race logistics, including transporting guests to the event site for race pack collection, bike registration and pre-race briefing.

Designed specifically for athletes competing in the race, Amanpuri’s retreat is ideal for those seeking to ensure they reach the start line prepped and primed to perform. Beginning with a 3D body scan and a consultation with a physiotherapist, the stay incorporates event preparation activities including stretching sessions and guided practice bike rides along the event course, as well as opportunities to rest and recharge in the extensive hydrotherapy facilities, on the beach or in the Aman Wellness Centre.

Amanpulo, The Philippines

Extreme Water Sports Retreat

This December, three Extreme Water Sports Retreats invite guests to take advantage of the unique features of the surroundings with an individually tailored island sports itinerary, as hi-octane or low-key as they like. The 3.5-mile island-to-island open-water swim is arguably the most rewarding way to reach the nearby community on Manamoc Island, where one can also embark on a two-hour hike to the panorama-endowed summit of Mount English.

Back at Amanpulo, the Kite & Surf Centre’s professional instructors provide both beginner’s lessons and advanced coaching for those keen to take advantage of the legendary Amihan wind for an adrenaline-fuelled kitesurfing session. The PADI dive centre introduces guests to the wonders of the underwater world, with scuba and free diving excursions.

On the surface, make use of the resort’s watersports equipment, including pedalboards that strengthen core muscles and improve balance. The golden beach stretches 3.5 miles around the island creating a natural running track; inland, a jungle workout trail is woven among the trees, with obstacles ranging from monkey bars and a tyre run, to a rope and wall climb, designed to challenge strength and coordination.
