The gift of gratitude

Celebrating culture and community in Europe and North Africa

The act of giving thanks enriches and elevates us. It has been proven that those who show their gratitude and share their light are more likely to be happy – because they are consciously open to the positive. It’s not a matter of personality, but of practice: when we choose to give gratitude, we receive happiness in return. The festive season gives us all a chance to offer the gift of our thanks, to cherish what we love, and to look to the light.

For Aman, the season is a time to celebrate and give back to the communities and natural environments that sustain us. As an Aman guest during the festive season, you are invited to make meaningful connections with local cultures, participate in vital conservation initiatives, and to end the year in thankfulness and positivity. Discover the myriad ways in which Aman destinations are giving thanks and championing their communities this year.

I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.

Amanjena, Morocco lit up at night

Amanjena

Most guests make the short trip to explore the Marrakech medina during their stay in Morocco, but during the festive season, the medina comes to Amanjena. A special seasonal market captures the energy and bustle of the bazaar, the air fills with the scent of wood-fired tagine and couscous, and guests can browse an array of specially selected craft products and gifts. A storyteller will visit the resort on several occasions over the period, to regale guests with tales of hope.

A calendar of seasonal activities affords opportunities to express gratitude and reflect on the future, including olive tree planting for children (the oil harvested from the trees will be donated to an Atlas Mountain orphanage); a tree of wishes on which guests can pin their hopes for themselves and their families; and the chance to join the Amanjena team in the lighting of 1,001 lanterns. On 29 December, when the moon is full, a special stargazing session will invite younger guests to look through the telescope and select their own guiding star for 2021.

Aman Venice exterior

Aman Venice

Winter is when Venice is most true to itself. In this season, the squares are clear of the summer throngs, the faded gold sunlight silhouettes the basilicas and palazzi rooftops, and gondoliers steer their boats through the mist. The city is slower in pace and more romantic in atmosphere; in winter, it seems to expose its soul.

As La Serenissima becomes more inward-looking and reflective during the winter months, so too does Aman Venice. This year, the hotel has chosen to support the rehabilitation programme at Padova prison, which is home to a pastry lab where inmates master the making of panettone – and have won awards for the quality of their baking. Padova-made panettone will be served – and available for guests to buy – at Aman Venice throughout the festive season, with proceeds going back to support the programme. The hotel is also using the festive period as an opportunity to give thanks to the who have supported the city through the floods and the pandemic this year, offering free coffee and panettone to emergency and public sector workers from the 17 December to the run-up to Christmas Eve.
