Sky-high adventures in the desert

Sky-high adventures in the desert

With sweeping views of stratified rock formations and towering mesas, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument looming in the distance, Amangiri sits in the heart of 900 wild acres of protected valley – a scenic base for a multitude of outdoor adventures, including desert hikes, ridge-top horseback rides, and exhilarating climbing routes.

The stair across the sky

Invented centuries ago in the Italian Alps, a via ferrata (‘iron road’) is a series of cables and ladder rungs fixed onto rock face to enable the ascent of steep mountain routes. Amangiri has a range of these routes through the canyon landscape, catering to every level of ability and taste for adrenaline.

New for 2021, the Cave Peak Stairway extends the existing Cave Peak via ferrata trail into the air and up and across the canyon. Intrepid explorers can ascend its 120 steps, rising a dizzying 400 feet above the rocky floor below and offering head-spinning panoramas of this extraordinary landscape.

Crossing the canyons

Amangiri’s various via ferrata each explore a different aspect of the landscape, offering a memorable adventure for every level of experience.

The Hoodoo Via Ferrata incorporates a narrow suspension bridge across a deep gorge; the Vertigo route presents a more physical challenge, and, for those willing to put in the effort, the Red Line Ridge ascent to the summit of Stud Horse Mesa rewards climbers with tremendous views.

For younger adventurers, the Canyon Crossing via ferrata has been designed to challenge and inspire the whole family, introducing children aged six and up to the skills they need to tackle the challenging terrain of the Colorado Plateau.
