This January and February, renowned Buddhist spiritual master and scholar Geshe YongDong (Geshe La) travels to Amangiri, Amangani and Amanyara to personally guide guests on a journey to spiritual enrichment and lasting inner tranquillity.

Retreat with a master

‘Geshe’ is the highest monastic degree in Buddhism, a level of spiritual mastery only the most focused practitioners can achieve. Under the intuitive and loving guidance of Geshe La, over five days, retreat guests learn the practical skills needed to find peace in everyday life. Techniques covered include breath control to calm the mind, Tsa Lung exercises to relax the body, mindfulness practice to tune into the present moment, and meditation to promote inner peace.

The art of letting go

The hand that clings too tightly to familiar things cannot open to grasp something new. In this session, discover the three levels of attachment and how releasing the feelings and ideas we often cling to can help to achieve greater peace and improved wellbeing.

Changing perceptions

Our perceptions, positive and negative, influence every aspect of our wellbeing. Positive thought patterns create positive experiences in life, whereas dwelling on negative thinking invites negativity. Heightening awareness and choosing to focus on the positive leads to a transformation of heart and mind, greater fulfilment and a more peaceful spirit.

Healing anger

Anger has the destructive force of a lit match in a dry forest – it can destroy peace of mind in a heartbeat. Redress the balance. By understanding the two types of anger, hot and cold, and by practising the special insight techniques of mindfulness and awareness, we gain control over this powerful negative emotion and transform our daily lives.

The power of the breath

Fast, shallow, uncontrolled breathing is connected to stressful situations and negative emotions. By controlling the breath, we can control how we feel. This session develops slow and mindful breathing, and links the breath with the mind, helping participants to assume control of their emotional state, whenever they wish.

Living in the moment

Our thoughts often wander between the past and the future without pausing to explore the clarity, passion and perfection of the present moment. By focusing instead on the five senses – seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching – we bring awareness into the here and now, re-awakening our minds to the present and the peace it offers to us.

Sample Daily Schedule

  • 7.30: Breathwork, Tsa Lung exercises and meditation practice with Geshe La
  • 8.30: Breakfast
  • 10.00: 90-minute session with Geshe La
  • 12.00: Lunch at leisure
  • 14.30: 90-minute session with Geshe La
  • 16.00: Spa treatment
  • 18.00: Dinner at leisure
  • 19.30: 60-minute chanting, mantra recitation and meditation with Geshe La
Each day begins with healing breath work, gentle Tsa Lung exercises and quiet meditation. After breakfast and lunch, Geshe La leads a 90-minute session. Experience a rejuvenating spa treatment in the late afternoon; then after a leisurely dinner, Geshe La leads a 60-minute evening session of chanting, mantra recitation and meditation. These full-board retreats include accommodation, optional daily group movement classes and airport transfers. After each retreat, Geshe La will stay on as a specialist in residence for two days, offering guests further opportunity to draw on his wisdom in private one-to-one sessions.
