A New Destination in China

A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE, ENTWINED WITH THE PAST

Opening in 2017, Aman’s fourth property in China is a tranquil village of historic dwellings, surrounded by sacred camphor woodland – a peaceful, introspective setting that belies its proximity to vibrant downtown Shanghai. Both forest and village tell an incredible story – of millennia of history, daring engineering feats and a philanthropic endeavour spanning hundreds of kilometres along the country’s eastern reaches

"Beauty resides in time"
Zhuangzi, Chinese philosopher, 4th century B.C.

THE FLOOD

The story begins in Jiangxi, the mountainous cultural heartland of eastern China some 800 kilometres southwest of Shanghai. The construction of a reservoir in the province threatened houses dating back centuries and trees that had stood for more than a millennium. A bold plan was conceived to save these cultural and natural treasures

THE TREES

The forests of ancient camphor trees growing in the hills and mountains around the town of Fuzhou were integral to the people who lived amongst them. The trees are symbols of strength and contemplation, and their calming scent is renowned across China for inspiring equanimity. Faced with the rising waters, 10,000 of the oldest trees were selected for relocation

THE VILLAGE

From the floodplain, 50 Ming and Qing Dynasty houses were also chosen for preservation. As master craftsmen documented architectural details for their reconstruction, ancient building techniques were rediscovered, and inscribed boards above the main entrances revealed family histories dating back more than 2,000 years

THE JOURNEY

The expedition of 800 kilometres to Shanghai required a diverse team of world-class specialists, including botanists, engineers and traditional Chinese architecture experts. On arrival, trees were planted in native soil, facing the same direction as they had previously. Meticulous records were made during the process, and the ancient dwellings were carefully reconstructed, piece by piece

A NEW HOME

After three years of careful nursing, new shoots began to appear on the trees and contemporary structures were built alongside the ancient houses. A peaceful sanctuary, spread across 100 acres, the new Aman property is a living reminder of Fuzhou’s past – a serene refuge, combining ancient heritage and delicate natural beauty with modern elegance

A NEW DESTINATION

Set within easy reach of central Shanghai, the property will be a destination for inner cultivation. When it opens in 2017, guests will experience a contemplative retreat that embodies traditional Chinese culture. Warm earthy tones, creamy whites and moss greens form much of the colour palette, and reflection pools enhance the tranquillity within and without
