The world’s last remaining Buddhist kingdom, Bhutan has strict rules in place to preserve its traditional art, design and architecture, which thanks to the country’s historic isolation and the fact that it was never colonised, have remained free of external influences for centuries. Even its national outfits – the gho and kira – are still worn by the Bhutanese daily.
This 12-night journey takes in all five of Amankora’s lodges to explore the multifaceted Land of the Thunder Dragon through its untouched treasure trove of fashion, art, architecture and design. Experiences include sketching the Memorial of 108 Chortens on Dochula Pass, joining a tsa-tsa workshop with a local monk to create miniature stupas for blessing, painting the black cranes of Gangtey, learning more about the symbiosis between Buddhism and architecture by exploring magnificent religious monuments and visiting a village of weavers and fabric artisans.
