The gift of gratitude

Celebrating culture and community in the USA & Caribbean

The act of giving thanks enriches and elevates us. It has been proven that those who show their gratitude and share their light are more likely to be happy – because they are consciously open to the positive. It’s not a matter of personality, but of practice: when we choose to give gratitude, we receive happiness in return. The festive season gives us all a chance to offer the gift of our thanks, to cherish what we love, and to look to the light.

For Aman, the season is a time to celebrate and give back to the communities and natural environments that sustain us. As an Aman guest during the festive season, you are invited to make meaningful connections with local cultures, participate in vital conservation initiatives, and to end the year with thankfulness and positivity. Discover the myriad ways in which Aman destinations are giving thanks and championing their communities this year.

I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.

Amangiri in the wilderness of the Utah desert

Amangiri

In the sublime wilderness of the Utah desert, Amangiri works closely with its neighbours in the Navajo Nation, providing support for the community through various fundraising initiatives. Throughout November and December, guests will be invited to discover the delicate craft of rug weaving and to enter a raffle for a special Chief Blanket, with all proceeds going to a local charity. Amangiri’s Culinary Team will also prepare more than 150 festive meals to be distributed to Navajo families. To brighten the holidays of some children in needs, Amangiri will also invite guests to purchase stuffed animals as part of a care package to be distributed to children recently placed in the foster care system.

While celebrating the festive season at Amangiri, guests will have the opportunity to give thanks over a daily Well Wishing ceremony - a Navajo inspired gratitude ritual led by a local elder - and to show their appreciation to our staff through a special gratitude project.

Over Christmas and New Year, the days begin with sunrise yoga, and end with twilight desert hikes, as the sun sets behind the mesas and the sky glows gold. Each evening, Amangiri’s resident astronomer leads tours of the stars, focusing on a different facet of the night sky each day.

Local craftswoman at Amanera, Playa Grande

Amanera

Surrounded by golden sands and the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean, it’s easy to feel sequestered from the everyday world at Amanera. During the festive period, however, the resort renews its connections with the nearby communities and brings guests closer to the local culture through a number of special seasonal initiatives. For one month from 18 December, the tree of wishes takes pride of place in the resort lobby. Covered in envelopes, each representing a ‘need’ for equipment, supplies and repairs for the local Municipal Hospital Dr. Virgilio Garcia in Cabrera, it provides guests with opportunities to support, while also giving children the opportunity to pick toys from its branches – a celebration of both giving and receiving.

On 20 December and 2 January, local artisans visit the resort as part of a programme of celebratory themed nights, setting up a market where guests can buy hand-made craft projects and art.

Woman exploring the coastline outside a villa at Amanyara

Amanyara

As Christmas comes to the island shores of Providenciales, heralding Amanyara’s customary calendar of festive events and celebratory experiences, the resort is also devoting its energies to restoring local communities after the impact of Covid-19. Working with the island’s government, the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association and Tropical Shipping, Amanyara has launched the Community Staples Mission, a drive to source and supply essential food to local families whose livelihoods have been threatened by the pandemic – including families of the Amanyara team members.

Amanryara has provided several hundred packages since the initiative began and is aiming to reach a total of 1,500 families in the island community this season. Guests enjoying the tranquillity of Amanyara with their own families are kindly invited to support the initiative and help provide hope to those who need it.

Dog sledding at Amangani

Amangani

Surrounded by a sublime winter-wilderness landscape, Amangani celebrates the festive season by focusing on immersing oneself in the beauty of surrounding nature, whether skiing down the slopes of Jackson Hole, or admiring the mountains and landscape from the vast windows of the Lounge. Over the Festive period, The Teton Raptor Centre pay visits to bring guests face-to-beak with the region’s most magnificent birds of prey, and in-house naturalist Jared Paul hosts eye-opening introductions to the wonders of the wilds around Amangani.

Local musicians will be visiting each evening of Christmas week to provide live acoustic sessions in the Lounge, while those seeking healing and restoration can take part in a series of crystal sound bowl healing sessions designed to restore mind, body and soul in time for the new year. In the library, the Amangani tree invites guests to hang its branches with their wishes for the future and their expressions of gratitude for the blessings in their lives.
