Days of gold

The sunshine and splendour of late summer in Europe & North Africa

The last days of summer are among the year’s most magical. The Mediterranean sparkles in sunlight, warm breezes caress the coasts, and inland, the leaves are gilded with the promise of autumn. The pace and energy of summer’s early days have matured into a more languid, leisurely rhythm. Although the promise of adventure and discovery remains, each of these retreats offers the solace of a slower, gently inspiring way of living – somewhere to savour and celebrate the end of the season.

Adventures in the Agafay desert

Amanjena reopens on 15 October, when the intense heat of the Moroccan summer has given way to the comfortable warmth of autumn. Set apart from the clamour of Marrakech, the pink pisé-walled retreat is a serene and expansive oasis, its generous Maisons ideal for families seeking late-season sunshine close to home.

Not far from Amanjena, the stone desert of Agafay is an otherworldly landscape spread over several hundred acres at the base of the Atlas Mountains – a vast playground for quad bikes, e-bikes and dune buggies. Take a camel ride across the dunes to watch the sun set into the Atlas mountains, before a Berber dinner prepared by Aman chefs under the clear star-lit sky.

Grandeur and gastronomy in Venice

The light in Venice is at its most magical in autumn, with golden hues varnishing every corner. the streets are less busy, the lagoon air is clearer and fresher, and simply strolling the streets, losing track of time is a delight once more. Aman Venice invites guests to enjoy a complimentary fourth night with three-night stays, and from within the 16th-century walls of the Palazzo Papadopoli, it opens up the secrets of the city – touring artisan workshops to discover historic craft practices, learning to row, Venetian-style, on the Lagoon, or simply soaking up the sunshine in one of the palazzo’s two gardens, watching the world drift by on the Grand Canal.

Bellissima Venezia retreat

For autumn and early winter, three-Michelin-starred chef Norbert Niederkofler will join Aman Venice’s executive chef Dario Ossola during a series of dinners to celebrate the finest seasonal flavours from the Rialto Market, the Venetian lagoon and the city’s islands. Taking place on 9-10 October, 20-21 November and 7-8 December, guests will experience a varying menu within the hotels’ restaurant Arva, which will highlight the two chef's instinctive understanding of flavour and creativity.

Accommodation on the Sveti Stefan Island, Montenegro

Montenegro’s forest shores

On Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, the warmth of summer lingers into the autumn, with bright days, clear skies and balmy evenings lasting through September and beyond. Aman Sveti Stefan’s three beaches carry the promise of sunshine, seclusion and watersports until the island village closes for the season on 14 October. Across the isthmus on the mainland, the historic royal residence of Villa Milocer remains open to guests and for exclusive use throughout the year, as does the Aman Spa beside it, where wild-harvested flowers and herbs from the coastal pine forests are transformed into restorative wraps, balms and scrubs.

End the summer exploring one of the most extraordinary coasts in Europe, dotted with impossible picturesque medieval towns, mountain forests and tranquil lakes. While the fortified village remains open, guests seeking to make the most of the season’s sun can enjoy a complimentary seventh night when they stay for a week – either in one of the village’s restored fisherman’s cottages or in the elegantly simple suites of Villa Milocer.

Late-summer in the Peloponnese

Now, the waters of the Argo-Saronic Gulf are balmy and sparkling in the September sun. It’s a time for early-morning swims, for leisurely coastal cruises and island-hopping forays to Spetses and Hydra, and for evenings watching the sun sink into the horizon over cocktails on Amanzoe’s 360º-view hilltop. Until 31 October, the classically inspired retreat welcomes guests to enjoy one of the most special times of the year in this part of Greece – an idyllic balance between calm and quiet and warm and inviting.

Arrive at Amanzoe for a short break of three nights or more and take advantage of additional end-of-summer benefits including exclusive rates and late check-out. Complimentary transfers take guests down to Amanzoe's Private Beach Club, that lies below the hilltop resort overlooking a sheltered bay, where non-motorised watersports can be enjoyed and guests can depart on island-hopping day trips.
